Cooking Star's Rx To Satisfy Salty Cravings!

                          Taming Salty Cravings!

Ah Cravings...some people have carb cravings, some have sweet cravings and
then there are those who love potato chips, nuts and pretzels, in other words--
salty cravings.

Well, if you can't go a day without potato chips or nuts, you're not alone,
food network star--Giada De Laurentiis feels your pain- as she too
also shares the same cravings for salty foods.
And unlike a lot of stars who also cook, Ms. Delaurentiis seems to have
controlled and managed her cravings and (weight) for all of these years.
So, what does she do if a salty cravings strikes?
She goes for legumes, in other words beans (or peas) but more specifically--
Chickpeas.

Yes, chickpeas- the legumes you use to make great tasting hummus, are
the same food Ms. Delaurentiis uses to shut down salty cravings.

Why chick peas?
The beans pack a 6 grams of metabolism-revving protein and 4 grams of filling
fiber per ping pong ball-size handful.

That's it- and if you want to follow in the steps of the Food Network

star-then look for crispy chickpeas called Saffron Road Crunch Chickpeas-
which can be found at supermarkets or online at Amazon.com. Price --$4 for 6 oz.
Or save your money and buy canned chickpeas, rinse them a few times,
dry them off, place them on a cookie sheet, sprinkle some olive
or coconut oil over them and bake for 30 mins. at 350 degrees.
You can add some spices- curry or turmeric powder, cayenne pepper
or grated cheese before or after baking them.

Hot In Cleveland's Rx To Ease Stress!

                     Reduce Stress By Baking!

With Christmas less than 2 wks. away, we know a lot of you out there
will be baking. Baking cookies, pies, cakes-etc.

If you watched yesterday's Rachael Ray's show- then you remember
star Valerie Bertinelli - baking some of her favorite holiday cookies.
Although a lot of people may struggle this time of yr. with weight and
and other weight-related issues, baking can be therapeutic.

Therapeutic how?
The scent of cookies baking can help transform you back to a time

when things were less complicated, happy and carefree.
You may also remember the times you spent with grandma or mom

or other relatives and that can also help you feel more safe and secure.

So, if you were reluctant to bake for fear it may trigger a binge,
just think of those cookies or that pie as stress relievers.
And if you don't want to bake, but want the scent of something baking,
do this...place a piece of aluminum foil in the oven, pour on a little
vanilla extract, some cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Turn on the oven
to 250 degrees, and leave it on for 15 to 30 mins.
Memories of mom, grandma and cousins will come flooding back.

That's it- and if you want some more tips on the benefits of Christmas treats,
go to our main blog...SupermarketRxs@typepad.com
And if you want some of the cookies, Valerie Bertinelli baked- go to
Rachael Ray.com and scan the site for Valerie's name.

Good Luck!
